High Plains Shootout 2026 β€” In the Books!

What a day at the old Claude High School gym on January 17th! Our wrestlers competed tough and represented ACWA with pride. Here’s how the team did:

Massive thanks to our volunteers β€” and look, if you think you know what volunteering is, you’ve never worked a wrestling tournament. You haven’t lived until you’ve explained a bracket to the same dad four times, tracked down a missing 46-pound kid who was definitely just at the concession stand, and hauled mats at 6am before you’ve had coffee. These people are built different and we owe them everything.

And a special shoutout to Ben T’s Boneshack BBQ, proud winner of the 2026 High Plains Wrestling Region BBQ Excellence Award β€” as voted by 200+ hungry wrestlers, parents, coaches, and refs who cleaned every tray.

πŸ† Early Season Success!

This season is off to an incredible start, with several tournaments under our belt from Lubbock, Canyon, Randall, Amarillo, and Oklahoma!

Our wrestlers began the season on a high note, competing in an early tournament in Lubbock under the lights on the Frenship football field, where every athlete medaled. With several more tournaments ahead, our team is ready to continue their hard work and dedication on the mat.

Warner Community Building

We are extremely grateful for our home base, the historic Warner Community Center, a century old School that is one of the first in Armstrong County.

”.. built about 1912 as Llano School (15 mi. SW of Claude), was vacated in 1930, used as rural community center, then moved 1939 to this site donated by Mr. and Mrs. J.T. Christian. Volunteers applied stucco and remodeled interior, using funds raised by the Armstrong County Federation of Women’s Clubs. The center name honors Dr. and Mrs. Wm. A. Warner, pioneer leaders in social progress and culture. (1962)”

β€œIt was located two and one-half miles west of the old Baker homestead. The schools were held in the summer, as most of the children had to go long distances, the winters were so severe, the snow storms being numerous, the winds blowing the snow making it very dangerous and most impossible for children to attend school through the winter months. Schools were built with state and county funds. Funds being scarce when the Llano school building was complete, the cowboys helped buy the furnishing for this school. They were a fine bunch of men, always generous, helping the people and their county in every way. A Sunday School was soon organized at Llano. Mr. Jim Grimes, whose present home is in Claude, Texas, was elected Sunday School Superintendent. The Bakers and other settlers were elated over being able to have this school so near so their children could attend Sunday School and church regularly.”
